What a 6ft fence actually does. It stops you being overlooked at ground level, from neighbouring gardens, patios and paths. It will not screen upstairs windows; nothing at fence height can. It does less for noise than people hope: blocking sound needs mass, and it travels over the top.

Fewer posts per run. Panels sit at 247cm centres, and a run takes one more post than panels: ten posts carry nine panels, over 22 metres. Roughly a quarter fewer posts, and holes, than the same boundary in 6ft-wide panels.
