Picket — straight top vs scalloped

Classic white PVC picket is the look of painted timber without the upkeep. It does not need painting, staining, or sanding, and will not rot, warp, or splinter. Browse the range in Picket Fencing or start a package with Picket in the planner.

Classic Straight Top

A clean, even upper line across the panel. Ideal for neat frontages, paths, driveways, and tidy garden boundaries — traditional or modern.

Classic Scalloped

A gently curved top line for a softer, more decorative finish. Especially suited to traditional gardens, entrances, and feature boundaries. Plan scalloped as a matching run so the curve stays consistent.

Feature Straight top Scalloped
Top profile Level, clean, uniform Curved, decorative
Best for Smart frontages, paths, driveways Feature gardens and entrances
Widths 6ft and 8ft 6ft only (in current stock)

Each picket panel is supplied with top and bottom rails and pre-routed pickets — 11 pickets on a 6ft panel, 15 on an 8ft panel. Posts, caps, and gates are selected in the planner.

Panel sizes (all systems)

Dimensions below use approximate metric panel sizes (rail length). When you plan a run, the planner works in installed bay centres (about 1.83 m for 6ft panels and 2.44 m for 8ft) so post counts stay honest.

You can mix 6ft and 8ft straight panels on the same run where the layout needs it; the planner handles the mix. Prefer 8ft on long straight stretches to reduce post count; 6ft where access is tight.

Pool fencing

A white PVC baluster barrier for pool surrounds and safety-conscious boundaries — the same weatherproof build as picket, in a taller, closer-spaced look. See Pool Fencing or plan a pool package.

StyleSizes
Flat baluster6ft & 8ft wide · 3ft & 4ft high
Square baluster8ft wide · 3ft & 4ft high

Privacy — Cascade

Full-height screening for seclusion, shelter, and wind protection. Privacy panels are 8ft wide × 6ft high in Tongue & Groove or Lattice-top. Matching 5×5 posts and caps are selected in the planner. Shop Privacy · Plan Privacy.

Ranch post-and-rail

An open post-and-rail style in white PVC — the paddock and estate look without timber upkeep. Panels are 8ft wide; choose 2, 3, or 4 rails (rail count sets the height). Shop Ranch · Plan Ranch.

Portable freestanding fencing

A freestanding, no-dig system for events, work sites, temporary boundaries, and anywhere you cannot set posts. Units are typically 6ft wide and link with corner brackets instead of posts. Railed portable kits support openings (leave a gap) rather than picket gates. Shop Portable · Plan Portable.

Posts & set depths

Permanent fences — Picket, Pool, Privacy, and Ranch — stand on PVC posts set into the ground or surface-mounted. Portable runs use corner brackets instead. Browse posts.

End, Line, Corner & Blank

TypeWhen to use it
End PostStart or finish of a run, or beside an opening — panel connects on one side only.
Line PostBetween two panels in a straight line.
Corner PostWhere the fence turns (e.g. 90° garden corner).
Blank PostWhere rail slots are not required — certain gate-hanging or finishing situations.

Rule of thumb: one more post than panels on a straight run, plus a corner post at every turn. The planner calculates this when you enter your layout and measurements.

60in vs 78in posts

Post lengthTypical panel heightRough set-out
60in (152 cm) 2.5ft and 3ft panels (Picket / Pool) ~3ft above grade · ~2ft set in the ground
78in (198 cm) 4ft panels (Picket / Pool) ~4ft above grade · ~2.5ft set in

Privacy and Ranch use larger 5×5 posts matched to full-height panels. For hard surfaces (concrete, paving), choose the hard-surface option in the planner so steel surface mounts are added per main post.

Post caps & picket caps

Post caps (4×4 and 5×5)

Finish every post with a matching cap. Common styles include External Flat, Internal Flat, Gothic, and New England — sized for 4×4 or 5×5 posts depending on the fence system.

Picket caps

Picket tops can be finished Chamfered or Pointed. The planner applies your choice across panels and matching picket gates.

Gates & openings

Every permanent fence style has matching gates. Browse gates or add openings in the planner.

Standard picket gates

Standard picket gates are commonly offered in 3ft, 4ft, and 5ft widths to suit each fence height. Pool, Privacy, and Ranch have their own matching gate options where stocked.

Single and double leaf

Choose a single gate or a pair of gates (double leaf) for wider openings. Every gate ships with self-closing hinges, a latch set, and fixings. A pair of gates also includes a drop rod by default.

Custom-width picket gates

Custom picket gates cover openings from about 50 cm up to 6ft (183 cm) wide. They are made to measure in our workshop (typically about a one-week lead time), priced as a base workshop fee plus a per-cm size adjustment, and are non-refundable once manufactured. Wider leaves may need a castor for support — the planner flags this.

Portable railed kits: plan an opening as a gap rather than a picket gate. Picket-style portable kits can still offer a matching freestanding gate where listed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PVC and timber fencing?
PVC fencing is a low-maintenance vinyl alternative to timber. It does not need painting or staining, will not rot, warp, or splinter, and keeps a clean white finish year after year — most customers choose it to avoid the ongoing upkeep timber needs.
Which fence style should I choose?
Picket suits front gardens and decorative boundaries; Pool is a taller, close-spaced baluster barrier for pool surrounds; Privacy (Cascade) is a full-height 8ft × 6ft screen; Ranch is open post-and-rail for paddocks and estates; Portable is freestanding for events and sites where you cannot dig posts. Use the comparison table above, then open the matching category in the planner.
Do the panels come with everything I need to install them?
Each panel is supplied with its top and bottom rails and its pre-routed infill — pickets, balusters, boards, or rails, depending on the style. You add the posts (or portable brackets), caps, and any gates in the planner so the package matches your run length, corners, and openings exactly.
How do I know how many posts I need?
As a rule of thumb you need one more post than the number of panels in a straight run, plus a Corner Post at every 90° turn. The planner does this automatically — enter your layout and measurements and it builds the post list. Portable kits use corner brackets instead of posts.
What is the difference between a 60in and a 78in post?
On Picket and Pool fences, 60in (152cm) posts suit 2.5ft and 3ft panels — about 3ft sits above ground and 2ft is set in. 78in (198cm) posts are used for 4ft panels, where about 4ft sits above ground. Privacy and Ranch use taller 5×5 posts matched to their panel height.
Can I order a custom-width gate?
Yes. Custom picket gates cover any opening from 50cm up to 6ft (183cm) wide. They are made to measure in our workshop with about a one-week lead time, priced as a workshop fee plus a per-cm adjustment, and are non-refundable once made. The planner flags when a castor is recommended on wider leaves.
What is included with each gate?
Every gate ships with self-closing hinges, a latch set, and the fixings needed to hang it. A pair of gates (double-leaf) also includes a Drop Rod by default to secure the inactive leaf.
Can I install onto concrete or paving?
Yes. Choose the hard-surface option in the planner and we add a Steel Surface Mount per main post, sized to the post section. The mounts bolt onto concrete, decking, or paving so you do not need to dig post holes.
Do you deliver across the UK?
Yes, we deliver across the UK. Delivery is calculated at checkout, based on your order and delivery address. Trade quotes are available on projects over 50m — call 03333 222 050 or use Email me my quote and tick the trade option.
